District Election Officer and GHMC Commissioner Ronald Ross said enforcement teams in Hyderabad have so far seized Rs 21,85,37,377 in cash, other goods worth Rs 16,70,35,260 and 26,576.325 litres of illicit liquor during the Lok Sabha election period. Cases were booked against 276 people for poll code violations and 274 were arrested, while FIRs were registered against 376 people. Officials resolved 582 complaints on cash and goods and 38 on MCC violations.
Congress leader Vijaya Reddy, daughter of PJR, has moved the Telangana High Court seeking a direction to the Election Commission not to issue the notification for the Khairatabad bypoll. The court rejected her lunch motion petition seeking an urgent hearing. Vijaya Reddy, who lost Khairatabad to BRS candidate Danam Nagender in the 2024 assembly election, filed an election petition in 2024 alleging his affidavit did not fully disclose Form-26 details. It remains pending.
Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju said a special action plan is under way to develop Hyderabad as a national and international centre for gaming, VFX and animation. He reviewed arrangements for the Telangana Global Summit, to be held in December at Bharat Future City, at the Secretariat on Thursday. The summit will feature Comic Con, DreamHack, India Game Utsav and a B2B expo. The city already has 50 large and 150 mid-sized firms; students from 70 colleges and 50,000 visitors are expected.
Hyderabad has 70 private vehicles for every 100 people, Lok Satta chief and former IAS officer Jayaprakash Narayan said. In an interview to a YouTube channel he said Singapore has 11, Shanghai 17, and London and New York 24-26 per 100 people. He attributed the trend to the absence of quality public transport and first and last mile connectivity, which forms 20% of distance but 40% of time and 60% of cost. Expanding Metro and RTC services is the solution, he said.
The Centre has allotted 2,200 electric buses to Hyderabad under the PM e-Drive scheme. The RTC has reported to the government that the first batch of 137 buses will be available in the CURE area in November, with the final batch of 385 buses arriving in January 2028. Tender-1 covered 2,000 buses and tender-2 covered 200. Per-kilometre hire ranges from Rs 54.91 to Rs 66.60. EVEY Trans received 60 AC and 1,025 non-AC low-floor buses.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy inaugurates the 1,082-bed Dr Marri Chenna Reddy Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences at Sanathnagar in Hyderabad at 4:30 pm on August 17, The Hindu reported. Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha will attend. Officials said services begin with about 582 beds, with the rest ready by October. Built on 22.6 acres at a cost of Rs 1,070-1,126 crore, it has 37 departments, 15 operation theatres and 2,360 sanctioned posts.
Manjeera Rachayitala Sangham (Marasam), a people's literary organisation formed four decades ago in the erstwhile Medak district, will hold its 40th anniversary meeting in Hyderabad on October 2. The session begins at 10 am at the Suravaram Pratapareddy Auditorium in the Basheerbagh Press Club. Along with a review of its 40-year literary journey, critics will speak on literature from women's, Dalit and Dravidian perspectives, followed by a poets' meet in the evening. Marasam was formed by bringing employees, teachers, journalists and artists onto one platform.
Arrangements are complete for the Jubilee Hills Assembly byelection, with polling on November 11 from 7 am to 6 pm. The seat fell vacant after the death of BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath. A total of 4,01,365 voters will cast ballots at 407 polling stations across 139 locations. Of 58 candidates, BRS's Maganti Sunitha, Congress's Naveen Yadav and BJP's Deepak Reddy are the main contenders. Security includes 1,761 police personnel, eight CRPF companies and 139 drones. Results on November 14.
The BJP SC Morcha laid siege to the Hyderabad Collectorate on Tuesday, demanding that SC Corporation funds not be diverted and be used for SC welfare. Led by Morcha state president Kanthi Kiran, leaders and workers marched to the Collectorate at Lakdikapul. Police blocked them from entering; some tried to climb the gate, leading to pushing and arguments. Police arrested the protesters and removed them. Kiran alleged the government had diverted Rs 10,000 crore allocated to the Corporation over three years.
Police said a CCS special team with Saifabad police on Tuesday arrested Mohammed Faisal Shah Ali Jabri, 43, alias Abdullah, Sohail and Altaf, named in more than 180 chain-snatching cases in Hyderabad. A resident of Murad Nagar in Asifnagar, he has 14 non-bailable warrants pending across Telangana. After offences in 2023 under Saifabad, Moghalpura, Charminar and Nampally police limits, he shifted to Bengaluru and Rayachoti, evading arrest for three years.
The pre-release event of fantasy entertainer ‘Don’t Trouble the Trouble’, starring Fahadh Faasil, was held in Hyderabad. Chief guest NTR said he had recovered from an injury and that ‘Dragon’ would release on schedule. He wished success for Fahadh’s first lead role in Telugu and for director Sasank Yeleti’s debut film. Telangana Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy said construction under four phases of Indiramma houses would begin by the coming elections and be completed within the present government's term, with keys handed to beneficiaries. He laid the foundation stone for Indiramma Towers at Red Hills in Hyderabad's Nampally constituency on Tuesday. Registration will be done free by the government, and house documents will allow bank loans of Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh. Sites have been identified in 20 constituencies of the city's core region.
Hyderabad city police deployed She Teams from September 14 to 26 at the Khairatabad and Balapur Ganesh pandals, other major pandals, crowded areas and immersion routes to ensure the safety of women and girls. A total of 2,935 people were detained for eve-teasing, harassment and other objectionable activities. Officials said 858 were counselled, warned and released, 69 were punished, 24 fined Rs 1,050, 40 given community service with a Rs 1,050 fine, and five fined and jailed.
Assembly Secretary Tirupati issued a gazette notification dated September 26, in line with the High Court verdict, declaring the Khairatabad Assembly seat vacant. It states the seat fell vacant from April 23, 2024, with disqualification imposed under the Tenth Schedule para 2(1)(a) and Article 191(2). The High Court cancelled the membership of Danam Nagender, who won on a BRS ticket and later contested the Lok Sabha polls for Congress; the Supreme Court rejected his petition. Officials say the bypoll will follow the SIR exercise.
A real estate dealer, Mohammed Junaid (30), died after being stabbed in the Rein Bazar police station limits in Hyderabad's Old City. Locals alerted police about a man lying with stab wounds, and he was shifted to Yashoda Hospital in Santoshnagar, where he died during treatment. The body was sent to Osmania mortuary for postmortem. Two accused have been arrested, and both the accused and the victim are relatives, Assistant Commissioner of Police Mirchowk Shyam Sundar said. The motive is under investigation.

A refrigerator exploded and triggered a fire at a house in Rajarajeswari Nagar, Sanathnagar, Hyderabad. The blast occurred on Thursday morning at the house of Satyanarayana, and flames spread at once, completely destroying all household belongings. HYDRAA fire services staff reached the spot on receiving information and doused the flames. Nobody was at home at the time, and a bigger mishap was averted. Local MLA Talasani Srinivas Yadav consoled the affected family members.
Hyderabad She Teams detained 1,530 people for harassing women and girls during Ganesh Navaratri celebrations held from September 14 to 23. Fifty-four teams kept watch in plain clothes at Khairatabad, Balapur and crowded immersion routes. Forty-eight offenders were punished through court, while about 750 were counselled before family members. More than 2 lakh idols were immersed using 45,000 police personnel, 141 immersion points and 275 cranes.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy will perform the bhumi puja tomorrow for Indiramma Houses Towers comprising 480 flats at KPHB Colony. In the first phase, the government has sanctioned 7,340 flats at 18 locations across 16 assembly constituencies under CURE at an estimated Rs 807.40 crore. Each flat has 400 sq ft carpet area with a Rs 5 lakh subsidy; the beneficiary share is Rs 6 lakh. Reservations: SC 14%, ST 5%, BC 16%. Applications close August 15, 2026.
