Trump defers diesel tax, allows red-dye fuel on highways

US President Donald Trump issued an executive order late Monday deferring federal diesel taxes through year-end and temporarily permitting red-dye diesel — normally reserved for farming and mining — for highway trucking, a month before the midterm elections. The step could cut 24 cents a gallon; diesel hit a record $6.31 last week. Gulf Oil energy advisor Tom Kloza said the taxes are only deferred, not waived, and the order adds no supply.
