Supreme Court declines Centre's challenge in Great Nicobar PIL case
The Supreme Court refused to entertain the Union's challenge to a Calcutta High Court order upholding the maintainability of a PIL alleging Forest Rights Act violations in obtaining consent for the Great Nicobar Island mega-infrastructure project. Noting the matter is pending before the High Court and fixed for hearing on November 25-26, a bench of CJI Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana declined interference. Attorney General R Venkataramani argued the issue was of "great national importance".
