50 paise coins remain legal tender, RBI rules clarify
RBI rules make clear that 50 paise coins continue to be legal tender. Coins of 50 paise, Re 1, Rs 2, Rs 5, Rs 10 and Rs 20 in various designs remain valid, while coins of 25 paise and below lost legal tender status from June 30, 2011. However, 50 paise coins are valid for payments up to Rs 10 in a single transaction. Bank branches must accept coins, with no maximum deposit limit. An old coin does not automatically become a rare collectible.
