British Airways flight declares emergency over Ireland, returns to London

British Airways flight BA295, which left London Heathrow Terminal 5 for Chicago at around 11:50 am, faced an emergency about an hour into the journey. Flight tracking data showed the Boeing 777-200ER descend from 37,000 feet to roughly 9,000 feet over Irish airspace. Pilots issued emergency transponder code 7700, halted the 8-hour-40-minute flight and turned back. UK media said the aircraft was returning safely to Heathrow. The airline has not clarified the technical fault.
