Lionel Messi has retired from international football, telling Argentina fans that not returning to the national team would be "deeply painful". The 39-year-old scored a goal and provided two assists in his 208th and final international appearance, a 3-0 win over Benin at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires on Tuesday. Addressing fans after the final whistle, he said wearing the jersey had been a source of great pride. Messi will continue playing club football for Inter Miami.
